Concept

Melanconia è una citazione di un oggetto presente nella celebre incisione di Albrecht Dürer intitolata "Melencolia I" (1514). In essa vi è rappresentato una figura alata seduta con aria pensosa davanti ad una costruzione di pietra circondata da vari oggetti, attrezzi e simboli legati all'alchimia e legati alla conoscenza. Uno di essi è un solido geometrico, un cubo o un romboedro troncato. La sua costruzione è stata interpretata in varie maniere: una delle più interessanti è quella che la lega al "quadrato magico" anch'esso presente nell'incisione. Secondo M. Calvesi l'incisione del Durer rappresenterebbe la prima fase del processo alchemico (nigredo), secondo E. Panofsky rappresenta la frustrazione dell'artista ispirato ma consapevole di non poter accedere al livello più alto del dominio del pensiero...probabilmente una delle più interessanti è quella in cui "...la Melanconia non sia la rappresentazione di una sconfitta, ma di una esaltante e contrastata elevazione spirituale" V. Sgarbi.

Melancholy is a quote of an object in the famous engraving by Albrecht Dürer entitled "Melencolia I" (1514). In it there is represented a winged figure sitting pensively in front of a stone building surrounded by various objects, tools and symbols of alchemy and related the knowledge. One of them is a geometric solid, a truncated cube or a rhombohedron. Its construction has been interpreted in various ways: one of the most interesting is the one that connects to the "magic square", that is also present in the engraving. According to M. Calvesi, Durer's engraving should represent the first stage of the alchemical process (Nigredo), according to E. Panofsky it represents the artist's frustration inspired but conscious of not having access to the highest level of the domain of thought ... probably the most interesting is that in which "... Melancholy is not the representation of a defeat, but an exciting and contrasted spiritual elevation" V. Sgarbi.
